The Schiavenza winery, located in Serralunga d'Alba was started by the brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria in 1956. 
The winery is now managed by their daughter Maura Alessandria and son-in-law Luciano Pira, agronomist and cellar man. In the past the farm and the surrounding lands were owned by the Opera Pia Barolo; the work was carried out by sharecroppers called "schiavenza": from which derives the curious company's name.
